It was a successful year for the Bosch Group and Bosch in North America. Global sales in 2018 reached an all-time high of $92.7 billion, despite difficult economic conditions and weak markets worldwide. In North America, we also achieved an all-time high with $14.5 billion in sales revenue, growing nearly 6% over 2017. North America continues to be an important market for the Bosch Group, representing 16% of Bosch’s total sales. The number of associates in the region rose to 35,400, a year-over-year increase of more than 2.5%.
Bosch’s four business sectors – Mobility Solutions, Industrial Technology,
Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building Technology – all saw growth
in North America in 2018. Mobility Solutions is Bosch’s largest business
sector. With sales of $9.5 billion in 2018, the sector comprised 66% of
Bosch’s North American sales. Consumer Goods, at $2.6 billion in sales,
composed 18% of sales in North America. Industrial Technology’s $1.5
billion in sales equates to 10% of Bosch’s North American sales. Finally,
Energy and Building Technology’s sales, at $900 million, reflect 6% of the
total sales in North America.
Bosch continues its long-term investment in North America. In addition
to expansions of Mobility Solutions plants in Charleston and Anderson,
South Carolina, as well as a dishwasher plant and central distribution
center in New Bern, North Carolina, the company is investing $120 million
in a new plant in Celaya, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. The
approximately 225,000-square-foot facility will manufacture electronic
control units – key components for connected mobility – for the American
market. In November 2018, Bosch opened a new technology and innovation
hub in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
Bosch continues to transform itself into a major player in the Internet of
Things (IoT), which by next year is forecast to have a global market volume
of $250 billion; indeed, by 2025, it’s estimated there will be 55 billion
IoT devices globally, and aggregate IoT investment of nearly $15 trillion.
While many companies call themselves IoT experts, Bosch is uniquely
positioned for success with core competencies in sensors, software and
services. At CES 2019, we premiered a new IoT campaign, “Like A Bosch,”
with an entertaining video highlighting how we enable people to live more
easily, efficiently and safely in a connected world.
“Like A Bosch” refers to what sets us apart. Behind every solution we
develop is the question: “How is this going to improve someone’s life?” It
also refers to the sense of responsibility we demonstrate to our customers,
our communities and the environment. Just as important, it refers to our
unwavering commitment to treating our customers’ data with care, and
giving them full control over how it’s used.
And what’s the driver behind our innovation in IoT, our global leadership
in mobility, our emerging expertise in artificial intelligence, and our success
in so many other areas? Quite simply, it’s our people. In the pages
that follow, we highlight some of the special individuals at Bosch who are
not only shaping change in our industries, but making a real difference
in our communities.
On behalf of the North American leadership team, I want to thank our
associates throughout the U.S., Mexico and Canada, and our business
partners for their continued focus on excellence as we deliver fascinating,
high-quality solutions that are “Invented for life.”
President, Bosch in North America
